# What Is High-Pressure Laminate and How Does an HPL Press Work?

High Pressure Laminate (HPL) is composed of stacked phenolic resin impregnated kraft paper and melamine decorative paper. These layers are bonded under high pressure and high temperature by a High Pressure Laminating Press.

Formica HPL

  • Thickness: 0.5 mm to 1.2 mm
  • Typical use: bonded to substrates such as MDF (medium density fiberboard) or particleboard

Compact HPL

  • Thickness: 1.5 mm to 25 mm
  • Thick enough for direct-use applications

Application Fields

Both Formica HPL and Compact HPL are widely used in:

  • Kitchen cabinets
  • Office furniture
  • Industrial decoration
  • Exhibition materials
  • Train interiors
  • Ship interiors
  • Laboratory desks and countertops
  • Medical instrumentation
  • Bathroom cubicles
  • Outdoor furniture
  • Exterior wall paneling

They also perform well in high-traffic environments such as hospitality, offices, healthcare, retail, and other commercial spaces.

Manufacturing Process

1. Step one:

  • Phenolic resin kraft paper is impregnated on an impregnation line.
  • Melamine decorative paper is impregnated on an impregnation line.

2. Step two:

  • The phenolic kraft papers and melamine decorative paper are stacked.
  • The stack is laminated at high temperature and pressure by a High Pressure Laminating Press.
