The one-step impregnation line for phenolic kraft paper is usually built as a 4 ft line, suitable for 4 x 8 ft and 1.3 x 2.8 m HPL finishing. In some cases, customers also impregnate 8-foot-wide paper and cut it into 8 x 4 ft sheets to improve efficiency.

In compact HPL production, urea- and formaldehyde-based resin systems are used after condensation to form water-based resins with low shrinkage, chemical resistance, and low surface deformation tendency. Light-colored plain or woodgrain papers are pressed in a short-cycle laminating hot press after the impregnation process. During production, the paper passes through a resin tank containing urea-formaldehyde or urea-melamine resin and then receives a second coating of pure melamine resin.

Especially in the production of light-colored paper, the opaque components in the urea resin improve the covering power of the impregnated paper during hot pressing. The first section uses urea resin to impregnate the paper, helping balance tension between the board surface and the press surface.
