What Problems Occur During MFC (Melamine-Faced Chipboard) Hot Lamination?

Melamine décor paper provides a realistic decorative surface. However, several problems can still occur during the production of MFC (melamine-faced chipboard).
A. Melamine paper sticking to the press plate can have several causes:
- The hot-pressing time is too short, the temperature is too low, or heating is uneven, leaving the resin insufficiently cured.
- The moisture content of the raw board is too high.
- Resin add-on of the impregnated paper.
- The press-plate surface is not clean, or the release agent is used incorrectly.
- The board is positioned incorrectly.
Paper may stick around the edge of the press plate when the edge temperature is too low or the board is positioned incorrectly, leaving the resin insufficiently cured. Increasing the temperature appropriately or extending the hot-pressing time can address these causes.
B. Board bending and warpage
- From a hot-pressing perspective, excessive temperature difference between the upper and lower press plates causes the resin on the two sides to cure at different rates. The board bends toward the faster-curing side. The upper hot plate should therefore be maintained 3 to 5 degrees above the lower hot plate, as stated in the source process guidance.
- From a material perspective, differences between the two sides of the impregnated paper can also cause board bending. Using paper of consistent quality or adjusting the temperatures on both sides can reduce bending.
